Noobs

As we know the vet field is struggling for help just like everyone else is in the world. All the seasoned ones are leaving because they are done with the bullshit and so we have all these fresh young faces applying to the vet field and really have no idea what they are getting into. I can say things are tougher right now then they were when i started for sure. This is a challenge for sure.

At my work we have hired three new techs. One has been in the field and took a break and other two are babies to the field (we all started there). One is almost done her schooling for vet tech degree and the other is in school for a science degree.

I was lucky enough when i started to have some incredible mentors to teach me, patient, kind and wise and a sense of humor. These two really inspired me and showed me to love this job and i continued to meet such amazing techs who taught me great things. The biggest thing we all have to remember when starting out is patience and understanding. we literally have all been there and this field is all about time and experience which is why a lot of practices look for experience techs because it can get hard to teach when we ourselves are stressed, burned out, tired, frustrated etc. I dont think we mean to take it out on the fresh ones coming on i think its just a lot to take on and they are usually a lot younger and have no idea what its really like in the field yet. its not all rays of sunshine. and unfortunately we already are coming into the field with some mental problems of their own to begin with.

and im not saying they should be discouraged to coming into the field but the lay person gets unrealistic expectations about the field when they are interested in it. its best to talk to a veteran tech when you are young and looking at what type of career you want to get into. do some shadowing see some good bad and ugly. the field also has many other outlets you can work and its not just GP or ER mixed animals. you just have to work hard to reach the goals you want.

We just need to slow down and teach the next generation properly.
